Welcome to Mike's. Our family opened Thomas' Donut Shop on West Panama City Beach in 1971, and Mike's Diner in 1986. Mike Thomas grew up eating jumbo cheeseburgers, "just mayonnaise," he said, with an order of fries and a medium sweet tea, back when he had to drive into Panama City for something to eat. "I still do every now and then," Thomas said. Thomas offers his own burger, an 8 ounce Black Angus with a grilled bun, at Mike's Diner, which celebrated 25 years April 1. "Our burger is awesome, and the fries are so good," said waitress Julie Gordon, who has worked at Mike's for 23 years. Gordon admitted she was having a bowl of field peas in the back during lunchtime Friday when taking breaks from serving customers, some of whom were returning after breakfast. "We sell a ton of fried green tomatoes," Gordon said. "And most people have to get some of our good banana pudding." The fried green tomatoes are dipped in an egg wash and battered in seasoned corn flour. The creamy banana pudding will have you finishing the bowl, even after the Beach Lovers Lunch — an entrée, two sides, bread and dessert for about $6. One of the reasons his greens are so good — they are cooked with bacon and ham hocks. He also uses locally made seasonings, Stan's Stuff, available at stores in Panama City. Thomas has just completed expanding the diner by opening up an adjoining oyster bar, changing the name to Mike's Café & Oyster Bar. His secret to success? "Long hours. I get up early and work hard," Thomas said. "I talk to all my customers. I stand in the window and plate food. I bus tables. I spent a lot of time eating, and if you eat enough, you'll find out things that are good." Thomas starts his day by making the rounds, heading to Thomas' on Front Beach Road, continuing down to Mike's, then going for a walk at Frank Brown Park. "When you look out a the water every day, it's hard not to love it here," said Thomas, who goes fishing whenever he gets the chance.
